Happy Earth Day - Think Globally, Act Locally

Earth Day is back! RCT is celebrating by spending a day with the United Nations Association in Canada, Toronto Branch (UNACTO) to inspire youth to think globally and act locally to take action on climate change.

The event will feature leaders from the government, local community, academia, and private sectors through an exhibit of art and environmental initiatives, a keynote, and two panel discussions. RCT is proud to help support the community in reducing the environmental impact of their technology through recycling and refurbishing. RCT is an approved service provider to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment’s Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) program, and is happy to work with both organizations and individuals to not only divert thousands of tons of e-waste from landfills, but to also turn that technology into new opportunities for learning, success, and opportunity in the communities we live in.

The 2015 United Nations Climate Change, Conference of Parties (COP) which took place in December of 2015 helped to set the world stage for combatting climate change. A record number of more than 130 countries will sign the Climate Deal agreement which arose from this conference today at the United Nations Headquarters in NYC. However, as much as COP 21 was meant to incite global action, it starts with each and every one of us.

Here are four ways you can make a difference:

1) RCT Experience: Join the refurbishing team
Want to make an impact in the world and develop yourself? Join the RCT Experience and be part of the team that helps to refurbish computers and distribute thousands of computers to schools, charities/NFPs, and individuals needing affordable access to technology every single day. It’s an experience you won’t forget. Visit the Experience page to learn more.

2) Refurbish: Give your technology another life
When you’re ready to buy a new piece of technology, before you stick it in your attic, or send it to the landfill, REUSE it first. Visit our site for a list of items that you can donate at any time. When you donate your desktop computers or PCs they will get put back into the hands of the people who need them most.

3) Recycle: Divert, Divert, Divert
If your technology is truly at its end of life, then we will ensure that it is diverted from landfills by recycling it safely with our registered refurbishers. Check out our list of acceptable items ready for you to recycle! For WEEE certified drop off locations across Ontario, visit: Recycleyourelectronics.ca

4) Conserve: Use, but don’t abuse
We all use many different electronic devices including phones, tablets, laptops, and TVs on any single day. This places a much larger burden on the amount of electricity we use. Try not to leave your electronics plugged in after they’ve finished charging and remove chargers from the outlets when not in use.
