In Windsor, newcomer women – particularly refugee claimants – often face significant barriers when trying to access education, employment, and essential services.  One of the most persistent challenges is limited access to technology, which can make it difficult to navigate life in a new country.

Recognizing this need, Ready Set Go, Matthew House Refugee Centre and RCT came together in a powerful collaboration to help address this gap.  As a result of this partnership, 25 newcomer women now have access to their own computers-an essential tool for building independence and opportunity.

This initiative was sparked earlier this year when representatives from Ready Set Go connected with RCT to discuss the digital and social barriers faced by newcomer families in Windsor.  Alli Slavik, Community Engagement and Family Support Coordinator at Ready Set Go, works closely with families from Matthew House, offering navigation support and identifying critical needs.  Through these conversations, the idea for a collaborative solution was born.

For these women, a computer is more than just a device. It’s a lifeline to:

  • Education: Enabling participation in online ESL classes, digital literacy training, and continued education.
  • Employment: Supporting job searches, resume writing, and virtual interviews.
  • Essential Services Providing access to healthcare, legal resources, and immigration support.
  • Community Connection: Helping them stay in touch with loved ones and engage with local networks.
  • Financial Empowerment: Allowing mothers and families to build financial knowledge through online banking, budgeting tools and more.

“I am so happy to have a computer at home because it will help me access job application sites, do research, and complete homework since I am studying English.  It will also help my young daughter with her homework and research in the future. We are very happy with this useful tool.  Thank you so much.”  Newcomer Mother, Windsor

This initiative is part of a broader vision to ensure that every newcomer – regardless of background – has the tools to thrive in a digital world. It’ about more than access: it’s about empowerment, dignity, and opportunity.

We are proud to celebrate this collaboration and the positive impact it’s already having in Windsor.  It’s a testament to what’s possible when organizations unite with a shared purpose and a deep commitment to equity and inclusion.
